In January 2012, my colleague Ascia Santo wrote a thought-provoking article on how journalism schools teach students how to protect their digital information and communications and how to use the tools and expertise they need. Many professors interviewed by Santo expressed their concern about the threat of cyber-security, and she reported that people’s understanding of the issue was “of course popularized.” But in the meantime, many of the academics she interviewed also said they did not have formal, specialized courses in their curriculums to teach students such as encryption.
