Silk production has a long and colorful history unknown to most people. Scientific discoveries have shown that silk production existed in China from around 2500 B.C., although it could be much older. For hundreds of years, China kept the secret of silk to itself as one for the most closely protected secrets in history. Anyone revealing the secret of silkworms or trying to take silkworm eggs out of ancient China was punished by death.
At one time silk was reserved only for the Chinese emperor. Gradually, others began wearing silk. In addition to being used for clothing, silk came to have industrial uses in ancient China, something that happened in the West only in modern times. Silk was used to make musical instruments, fishing lines, weapons, ropes and even paper. During the Han Dynasty silk became a form of money. Farmers paid taxes in both rice and silk. The prices of goods were calculated in lengths of silk just as they had once been calculated in gold. The importance of silk is even reflected in the Chinese language. For example, of the 5000 most common Chinese characters, around 500 have silk as their “key”.
In spite of their secrecy, the Chinese eventually lost their monopoly on silk production. It reached Korea in around 200 B.C. when immigrants from China arrived there. Silk production came to India in 300 A.D.. It was not until 500 A.D. that silk production came to Europe when travelers illegally transported silkworms in hollow tubes of bamboo. These were used to establish silk industry in Rome (modernday Italy), although Chinese silk was still considered to be the best. Silk was brought to Rome from China by means of the Silk Road. There were actually two Silk Roads, one over land and one on the sea. The land route in particular had a huge effect in history. All sorts of trade goods—silver, gold, jade, porcelain—passed along this road. Ideas travelled the Silk Road too. For example the religion of Buddhism was carried to China from India by traders on the Silk Road. The Silk Road created the first international culture, exposing many people to the ideas and treasures of both Western and Chinese cultures.
40. Why were Chinese passing on the secret to foreigners seriously punished? It was because .

The quality of drinking water in Shanghai will meet European Union standard by 2010 and, a decade later, citizens in Shanghai will drink the best water in the world.
These were the goals set out by the Shanghai Water Authority. With the citys population expected to increase only slightly and the economy to boom by 2020, Chen Yin, and official with the water authority, said Shanghais water consumption will not increase from its present amount.
Zhang Yue, director of the Urban Construction Division under the Ministry of Construction, said, “Shanghai is the first city in the country to publicize these ambitions. They will not be easy to achieve.”
He said water saving will help keep the sustainable development of Chinas economy.
Saving one cubic meter of water means saving the citys infrastructure (基础设施) costs by 10,000 yuan. Last year, Shanghai saved 300 million cubic meters of water either from readjustment of industrial structure or the employment of new technology. “The aim is to arouse public awareness of the seriousness of water shortages,” Chen said. “The abundant surface water and amount of rain of the city are so misleading that they result in improper use of water.”
Shanghai lacks drinkable water. The Huangpu River, which supplies 80 percent of the citys drinkable water, is nearing exhaustion.
The city, therefore, has been exploring new sources from the Yangtze River and growing forests along it to conserve quality water.
Besides penning regulations, the authority is popularizing technology among the public to efficiently cut the amount of water used.
At present, the city has 600,000 family toilets, each using 13 liters of water per flush. These are to be renovated (整修) to use only 9 liters of water per flush.
The authority is renovating the first 200 toilets for households—at a cost of 40 yuan each.
In three years, all the toilets will be renovated, which saves the city nearly 15 million yuan every year in water conservation.
Another task the city is engaged in is the treatment of sewage (污水) to improve the water environment.
At present the city can only treat 44 percent of its daily 5.04 million tons of waste water. To meet the total demand, 27 more sewage treatment factories are to be established with an estimated investment of 18 billion yuan.
44. supplies people in Shanghai with their main drinkable water now.
A. The Huanghe River
B. The underground water
C. The Yangtze River
D. The Huangpu River
45. The first 200 toilets for households is being renovated by the government to .
A. make peoples technology more advanced
B. meet the increasing demand of water
C. change peoples wrong opinion of living standards
D. ease peoples living pressure
46. Which is implied in the passage?
A. The boom of economy and population will need a larger amount of water in 2016.
B. Foreign citizens today drink the better quality of water than those in Shanghai.
C. All the family toilets will be renovated to save water within 3 years.
D. Everyone today in Shanghai does not pay attention to water shortage.

Here is some mustknow information from a handbook on how people behave in doing business in some countries.
In Brazil
Brazilians are warm and friendly. They often stand close when talking and it is common for them to touch the person on the shoulder. People often greet each other (particularly women) with light cheek kisses. Schedules tend to be flexible, with business meetings sometimes starting later than planned. But to be safe, be on time. Meals can stretch for hours—theres no such thing as rushing a meal in Brazil. Lunches also can start in the mid to late afternoon. Brazilians are social, preferring facetoface communication over mails or phone calls. In Singapore
Singaporeans shake hands when they meet and often also greet each other with a small, polite bow. Business cards should be offered and received with two hands. Arriving late is considered disrespectful. So be on time. Efficiency (效率) is the goal, so meetings and dealings often are fastpaced.Singaporeans are direct in their discussions, even when the subject is about money. Rank is important and authority is respected. This determines both people interact in meetings. For example, people avoid disagreeing outright with someone with a higher rank.
In the United Arab Emirates
In the UAE, status is important, so the most senior or oldest should be greeted first with their titles. The handshake seems to be longer than elsewhere. So, do not pull away the handshake. Women should cover themselves when it comes to dress. Men also tend to be covered from neck to elbows (肘部) and down to the knees. People do not avoid entertaining in their homes, but they also hold business meals at restaurants. Touching or passing food or eating with your left hand is to be avoided. When meetings are onetoone, if your host offers you coffee, you should refuse. It might seem odd, but it is a cultural tradition. Coffee should only be accepted if it is always set out or presented.
In Switzerland
The Swiss tend to be formal and address each other by last name. They also are respectful of private lives. You should be careful not to ask about personal topics. Punctuality (守时) is vital, something that comes from a deep respect for others time. Arrive at any meeting or event a few minutes early to be safe. They also have clear structure in their companies. Higherups make the final decisions, even if others might disagree. Neat, clean dress is expected. The Swiss follow formal table manners. They also keep their hands visible at the table and their elbows off the table. It is polite to finish the food on your plate.
47. Where should people care about formal table manners when they are there?
A. In the United Arab Emirate.
B. In Singapore.
C. In Switzerland.
D. In Brazil.
48. Which of the following shows that Singaporeans respect authority?
A. They put facetoface communication in the first place.
B. They like efficiency.
C. They are supposed to avoid arguing with someone with a higher rank.
D. They want to finish meetings as soon as possible.
49. In the UAE, in which situation should you accept the coffee if it is offered? A. If you are greeting seniors.
B. If you are meeting the host alone.
C. If it is always set out or presented.
D. If you are dining with business partners.
50. The best title for this passage may be .
A. ways of communication
B. the workplace conditions
C. customs and social manners
D. living standards and social atmosphere

A new set of brain images shows why: Reading the Roman alphabets and Chinese characters uses different parts of the brain.
The results also suggest that Chinese schoolchildren have reading problems in a different part of the brain used in reading alphabetbased languages. This shows that the learning disorder dyslexia (inability to read properly) is not the same in every culture and does not have a universal biological cause.
Scientists described the results as “very important and revolutionary”. While dyslexia has certain common roots, they said, they now have some proof that this kind of functional problem works differently according to the different demands that Western and Eastern languages place on the brain.
Dyslexia is a common developmental disorder in which people of normal intelligence have difficulty learning to read, spell and master other language skills.
The results suggest that treating dyslexia around the world probably will require different treatments.
“Reading is complex,” said Guinevere Eden, Georgetown University professor. “This shows we need to be more openminded about diverse treatment approaches.”
Its origins are complex. There appears to be a genetic aspect to the illness. It also may result from brain injury before birth that changes visual and hearing pathways in the brain.
Earlier brain scans show that Englishreading dyslexics dont function properly in a left part of the brain associated with the awareness of 44 sounds from the English alphabet. However, according to the new study, reading Chinese uses some different parts of the brain located in the leftfront of the brain. It is associated with symbol interpretation. Unlike alphabet letters, Chinese characters represent entire thoughts and physical objects.

Dear Mayor,
Im Zhang Qiang, a Senior High student from No.1 Middle School. I am writing to draw your attention to some improper behaviour among us citizens: littering and scribbling. It makes our city dirty and unpleasant, and does harm to the image of our city. I always feel ashamed whenever I see this. It is clearly not appropriate for a citizen to litter and scribble about. I wonder if the city could place more dustbins around and set up specific rules against such behaviour. At the same time, citizens should be encouraged to develop good habits and better behave themselves. I believe that, with the joint efforts of both governments and citizens, our city will become a more enjoyable place in the near future.
Thank you for your consideration.
Yours faithfully,
Zhang Qiang

Yours faithfully,
Zhang Qiang
