Due to a computer error, American Airlines may lose as much as 54 million U.S. dollars in ticket revenue in the second quarter of 1988. R.L. Crandall, the company’s parent company, AMR, said that although the aircraft actually has seats, the company’s “Sabre” booking system shows passengers that the plane has no tickets available for sale. In this way, passengers who requested the purchase of the U.S. Aviation Department’s concessionary ticket were rejected and had to change their airline flight. In spite of such a big problem, American Airlines’ ticket income in the second quarter of 1988 still reached US$2.16 billion, and its profit reached US$11.40 million, which is close to the record level. The company adopted a new software program in the second quarter of 1988 to improve its computer-controlled ticketing system; however, ironically, it was this process.
