The Laser Geodynamics Satellite (hereinafter referred to as Laser Satellite) will be used to demonstrate the ability of laser-tracking satellite technology to make extremely accurate measurements of Earth’s rotation and crustal movement. The useful life of laser satellites is estimated at 50 years and may be sustained over 10 000 years in orbit. The main use of high-precision measurements is to better study the mechanism that causes the earthquake. NASA hopes to use laser satellites to perform real-time measurements of continental blocks called plate tectonics in seismic surveys and forecasts as well as specialized measurements along critical faults such as the St Andrews Fault in California.
