Members of COST 208 are comparing optical fiber loss measurements. This article presents some preliminary results. The entire attenuation spectrum of gradient and single mode fibers has been measured, covering a wavelength range from 700 to 1800 nm. For multimode fibers, the measured loss depends on the energy distribution injected into the fiber. Assuring the same energy distribution, the deviation between the measured loss spectra has remained within about ± 5%. Single-mode fiber injection power is very small, so the intensity of transmission close to the noise limit of the detector. In the low loss range, the difference between the loss spectra is approximately equal to ± 8%.
