“阳春白雪”原指春秋战国时期楚国流行的一种难度极大,但艺术性极高的歌曲。后来,成为高雅艺术的代名词。而“下里巴人”同样出自战国宋玉的《对楚王问》中,原指楚地流行的民间音乐,后指代通俗艺术。“阳春白雪”和“下里巴人”这一雅一俗,本无高低贵贱之分,但二者间的彼此影响、彼此竞争却构筑了清中叶以后,中国传统戏曲在变革中发展的格局。从原始歌舞到杂剧传奇,再到近代戏曲改良运动,中国戏曲史上有无数次戏曲理念
