Objective To study the short-term insulin treatment to induce type 2 diabetes relief and long-term clinical efficacy. Methods A total of 120 newly diagnosed type 2 diabetic patients admitted to our hospital from December 2008 to January 2013 were enrolled in this study. The patients aged 35-65 years old underwent short-term insulin therapy for 16 days. The changes of various physiological indexes were observed. Glycemic control and insulin secretion, as well as the duration of glycemic control after withdrawal. Results Fasting plasma glucose, postprandial 2-hour postprandial glucose and glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c) control indexes were significantly decreased in 120 patients after short-term insulin treatment (P <0.01). After stopping using insulin, the blood glucose control in these patients reached the standard for more than two months 79.5% of all patients, 62.0% of patients over six months, and 11.6% of patients over one year. Conclusions Short-term insulin therapy significantly improves glycemic control in newly diagnosed type 2 diabetic patients and maintains acceptable blood glucose levels for a longer period after discontinuation.
