我是半路向史的。浩如烟海的史籍和洋洋数千万言的各类中国通史,曾使我望而生畏,惊叹不已。然而,潜心研读之余,渐渐地,却常生朦胧缺憾之感,是什么呢?说不清。直到有一天,偶然读到英国学者赫·乔·韦尔斯写于本世纪上半叶的《世界史纲·生物和人类的简明史》(人民出版社1982年10月第一版)之后,朦胧的才变为清晰。 仅以《世界史纲》末尾,述及第一次世界大战结束的景况举例。韦尔斯在书中写道:
