高士密的笑喜剧《屈身求爱》中,语言被提高到了先于本质的地位。语言,尤其是所指意义被虚化的谎言在剧中模糊了公共空间与私人空间的界限,突出了人物身份在时尚和商品文化滥觞时代的易变性。它不仅在戏剧结构上推动情节进展,而且在社会学意义上重塑了人际交往的情境,更对人物思维起到了先遣和重构的作用。《屈身求爱》由此提出了语言与现实的关系这一命题,并在某种程度上暗示了两者并非单纯的反映与被反映的关系,语言可能扭曲现实,甚至可能决定和重构现实。在这个意义上,成于18世纪的该剧是有着超前意义的。
