1986年4月14日,法国女作家西蒙娜·德·博瓦尔因患肺水肿医治无效,在巴黎科尚医院逝世,享年78岁。博瓦尔女士一生致力于妇女争取独立自主的运动,“人不要生为女人,要成为女人”就是她1949年写在《第二的性》开头的一句名言。她同存在主义哲学家让·保罗·萨特结为伉俪,历时半个世纪共同生活在一起。这些给全世界争取独立自主的妇女们以极大的影响。萨特于1980年4月15日去世后,博瓦尔以自己的日记为基础撰写的《离别的仪式》,于1981年问世。在书中,她以冷静、细腻而又饱含爱情的笔触描述了丈夫最后十年的活动。发表这部作品后,她几乎不再动笔,而一心投身于提高妇女地位的运动。
