Objective To investigate the relationship between endothelin converting enzyme (ECE), endothelial function and type 2 diabetic macroangiopathy. Methods ECE mRNA level, ECE activity and endothelial function were detected by RT-PCR in 40 patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus and 60 patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus and macrovascular complications and 60 healthy controls. Results ECE mRNA level and ECE activity increased in patients with type 2 diabetes and further significantly increased in patients with diabetic macroangiopathy. Diabetic patients are generally impaired in endothelial function. Conclusion The impaired endothelial function is the initiating factor of diabetic vascular disease. The change of ECE is closely related to the macrovascular disease of type 2 diabetes mellitus.
