主题为“江南”的现代与当代中国艺术展暨国际研讨会于1998年3月至5月在加拿大温哥华举行,这一系列活动是从历史的和批评的角度,集中介绍和探讨江南的现代与当代美术史及其趋势,亦是首次在北美洲举行以本世纪以来中国的一个地区——“江南”为主题的大型的、综合性的、学术性的艺术活动.同样,在中国亦是第一次以一个地区的现代与当代的艺术之容貌挥师越洋,真可谓“满园春色关不住”.此活动获得了加拿大政府机构以及许多企业和个人的支持与赞助,由温哥华市立美术馆等十二家公立的和私人的画廊、以及BC省的三所大学和一所美术学院共同合作,并由加拿大梁洁华艺术基金会和西部艺术中心统筹,四十多位华人艺术家和海内外知名学者参加展览和会议.为此,无论活动的时间跨度,还是艺术展览频频开幕的气氛均已形成了’98之春北美洲的一个艺术焦点,同时,江南艺术在太平洋彼岸东西方交流重要的门户——温哥华的全面展示,不仅将加强不同族裔之间的沟通,而且也加强了温哥华和江南这两个兴旺发达地区的密切联系,对亚太地区的文化沟通与发展必将起到积极的作用.
The Modern and Contemporary Chinese Art Exhibition cum International Symposium on “Jiangnan” was held in Vancouver, Canada from March to May 1998.
