With the rapid promotion of China’s social and economic transformation, people are constantly facing increasing mental stress and mental disorders. Based on the empirical data from large sample surveys, a study of the current mental health status and impact mechanism of the Chinese population shows that persistent low status and downward mobility are more likely to cause depression. The status of fathers and elders has a significant impact on people’s mental health level, the lower the status, the higher their likelihood of depression. Intergenerational social mobility increases the likelihood of mental depressive symptoms occurring, but mainly from downward social mobility. In the process of rapid transformation, the unequal socio-economic status may be a deep-seated structural reason for the current high incidence of mental disorders in China. While improving mental health policies, laws, procedures and information systems, more attention should be paid to the fair distribution of the fruits of social and economic development.
