Every era is accompanied by the emergence of a type of city. This is true of Athens, Rome, New York and Shanghai. Tracing back to the process of their construction, the city becomes a mirror of complex reality. But, to be exact, precisely because cities are both producers and consumers of new ideas, they have broken the once tradition and continuity of their own evolution. At this point, the city seems to be both historically orderly and simultaneously a victim of unpredictable future chaos. The legendary architect Daedalus is famous for two remarkable achievements: he was the inventor of the maze and the designer of the wings, and the latter tragically led his son Icarus to die when he was too close to the sun. The city also seems to swing between these two twin forms of architecture. They have either become mazes that are hard to reach in the center, or have many births
