Objective To understand the sharing of needles among intravenous drug users and to explore the possible influencing factors. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted to conduct a one-on-one questionnaire survey of intravenous drug users in a drug addiction treatment center in Guangdong from May to June 2011. The survey included general demographic information, drug-related behaviors, sexual behaviors and HIV / AIDS prevention and control knowledge. Results The mean age of 267 male intravenous drug users surveyed was (38 ± 6.1) years and the mean age of first injection drug abuse was (28 ± 6.9) years. 30.71% of the respondents had shared needling behavior, and the respondents used mainly drugs of heroin. Logistic regression analysis showed that taking drug together with others (OR = 3.62, 95% CI = 1.77-7.37) and those who had common auxiliary devices (OR = 13.48, 95% CI = 6.66-27.27) were common risk factors. Conclusion The common needle behavior is common in intravenous drug users, and relevant departments should take effective management measures to reduce the occurrence of high-risk behaviors in this population.
