William Goldin, the Nobel Prize winner in literature, was a 20th-century English writer whose work is known for her rich religious meanings and fables. “Pincher Martin” is his fable novel, explores the complexity of human nature through the difficult process and unexpected ending of the protagonist’s sea life. Contrary to the notion of “arbitrariness,” the language’s “iconicity” mainly refers to an iconic relationship between the language and its meaning. This paper attempts to interpret this work from the perspective of iconicity and analyzes the human characteristics embodied in the text from three aspects of quantitative iconicity, distance iconicity and metaphorical iconicity, and finally summarizes the author’s view of humanity.
