With the holiday season under way and Christmas and the New Year just around the corner, December is the perfect time to dust off your passport and celebrate in style. Here are some ideas for where to go in December.
Koreans love their outdoor sports, and December is the perfect time for snow fans to ski. Gangwon-do, Korea’s most northeasterly provi-nce, is home to many winter sport resorts, including Pyeongchang county, which will host the Winter Olympics in 2018. Among the top resorts, Yongpyong and Alpensia are the largest and will see many of the 2018 Games’ snow events. Facilities here are extremely modern. The season generally starts in early December and this is a good month to come, as it is quieter than in the new year. Gangwon also has a lot of natural hot springs, which means you can relax in the water after skiing. Among the more popular hot springs in Gangwon-do are Osaek in Mount Seorak-san, the Cheorwon Hot Spring and Seorak Hanwha Waterpia.
Eleven years ago this month, thousands of tourists and many more locals were enjoying the high-season sun on Thailand’s most popular resort island when the unthinkable happened. The road to recovery following the Boxing Day tsunami was a long one for Phuket, but, on the 11th anniversary of the disaster, it makes people to see how far this little corner of paradise has come. With the year’s best chance for perfect weather, December is the perfect time to escape the northern hemisphere winter for the shores of Phuket. And the province has never looked better. A recent clean-up has helped to restore the natural beauty of Phuket’s beaches, where all commercial activities and illegal taxis are now banned. It’s easier and cheaper to explore the island’s many other beautiful places now. Day trips to the nearby Similan Islands, Phang-Nga Bay, and Ko Phi Phi are also made easier by the calm, clear waters from December to February.
