黑脸琵鹭是世界极濒危鸟类物种,每年春夏季在大陆繁育,冬季在台湾越冬。这一亘古不变的生理特性使它每年都在大陆与台湾之间迁徙,用生命的礼赞把海峡两岸紧紧地联系在一起。每年4月中旬,都有三四十只黑脸琵鹭来到这里,从到达繁殖地起,一对恩爱的黑琵“夫妻”就开始几个月的筑巢、交配、孵蛋、哺育、训练等辛勤“劳动”;一般每巢有2~3枚蛋,孵化约28天出壳,这期间它们每天轮流守护在巢穴中,用自己的身体进行孵化,每隔1小时要起身翻动鸟蛋,使之受热均匀。
