John Donne, one of the pioneers of the metaphysical school, under the influence of the potential patriarchy in British society at that time, all of his love poems reflected patriarchal discrimination and depreciation of women. He distorted and repressed women in different ways in his love poems Poems Do not Leave Words, Silence, Songs and Fleas, and he firmly believed that women are subordinate to men and do not trust women to be “forever loyal” Class of argument. This essay analyzes these poems in order to reveal Dorn’s deep-rooted ideas of discrimination against women caused by patriarchal ideology.
