At least part of the solar radiation reaching the Earth’s surface is reflected. Coarse sun sensors are generally used to determine the satellite attitude, solar sensors installed in silicon solar cells, the battery receives from the Earth’s reflected light (or reflection) will make the solar position measurement error. Flatley and Moore proposed a mathematical model to simulate the output changes of the raw sun sensor caused by the Earth’s solar radiation (visible light). This article discusses the results of validating this model with flight data. Flight data is taken from the Rossi X-Ray Time Trial Satellite (RXTE) and the subsequent Spartan 207 mission using this model. The Spartan 207 is a preprogrammed satellite without a radio remote command link, which is released by the orbiting vehicle’s Remote Manipulator System (RMS). It features an inflatable antenna device (IAE), a 50-foot diameter inflatable body mounted on a 100-foot inflatable rod. When the satellite is released by the remotely controlled robotic system, a timer is triggered if the SISS satellite’s central sun-sensor (SISS) captures the sun, expanding the antenna and deploying it. This is done to ensure that the antenna does not erroneously create an extension in the payload of the orbiter when the system is released and then seized again or for some reason the system has not yet left the orbiter. This article analyzes how to use this Earth Albedo model to set the threshold for a central Spartan satellite sensor to ensure that the Spartan 207 satellite inflatable antenna device does not trigger in-cabin release.
