A noteworthy phenomenon in China’s economic development is that after 2003, the economic growth in the western region is faster than that in the coastal areas and the gap with the coastal areas is gradually narrowing. Especially since the great development of the western region was implemented, the economic benefits in the western region have obviously improved, and the trend of widening the gap with the economic development in the region has been initially contained. From 2000 to 2008, the gross domestic product (GDP) of the western region increased from 1,665.5 billion yuan to 5,825.7 billion yuan with an average annual increase of 11.7%. The industrial added value increased from 594.6 billion yuan to 2.4 trillion yuan, an increase of nearly 4 times. Especially in recent years, after the financial crisis hit the eastern coastal areas, the western region has played a major contributor in this round of economic growth. There are many signs that China’s future economic growth depends mainly on accelerating urbanization and on catching up with the central and western regions.
