一天,苏格拉底和弟子们聚在一起聊天。一位其父相当富有的学生,趾高气扬地面向所有的同学炫耀:“我家在雅典附近拥有一望无边的肥沃土地。”当他口若悬河大肆吹嘘的时候,一直在其身旁不动声色的苏格拉底拿出了一张世界地图,想教训一下这个不知谦卑的年轻人,然后说:“麻烦你指给我看看,亚细亚在哪里?”“这一大片全是。”学生指着地图洋洋得意地回答。“很好!那么,希腊在哪里?”苏格拉底又问。学生好不容易在地图上将希腊找出来,但和亚细亚相比,的确是太小了。“雅典在哪儿?”苏格拉底又问。“雅典,这就更小了,好像是在这儿。”学生指着地图上的一个小点说。最后,苏格拉底看着他说:“现在,请你再指给我看看,你家那块一望无边的肥沃土地在哪里?”
