The Book of Paths is a guide to the navigation of the South China Sea, recorded by the fishermen on the eastern coast of Hainan Island, represented by Tanmen fishermen. It is a precious resource for studying the history and culture of the South China Sea. Not only can it prove that Chinese fishermen are the earliest groups developing and operating South China Sea islands, but they can also prove that fishermen groups that have established their fishing industry and trade business have historically maintained close and frequent ties with Southeast Asian countries Trade and cultural exchanges. Studying and investigating the history and culture of “The Book of Paths” and the people behind it is of great reference value for understanding and handling the frequent conflicts encountered by Chinese fishermen in the South China Sea.
