In May 1802, the thirtieth German writer Friedrich Schlegel arrived in Paris. When he wrote a series of warm letters to his friend Ludwig Tieck, which were soon publicized. The letter describes some of his most admired paintings by Louvre, in particular the two works by Mantegna, a Goethe artist who had traveled Italy 30 years ago, 48] and the “Altarpiece of St Christopher” by Memling [Fig. 49].
