In 1981, the United States Centers for Disease Control (CDC) worked with state health authorities to begin a telephone sample survey of behavioral risk factors that compensates for the national home health sample survey that is costly and the results do not fully represent the state’s limitations. Telephone sample surveys provide information on the prevalence of various behavioural risk factors in the state population. The aim is to plan, implement and monitor the progress of certain public health issues and to support proposals for public health laws such as mandatory use of seat belts, drunk driving and Tobacco taxes and other bills. From 1981 to 1983, 25 states used the Centers for Disease Control.
