孟子确立了儒家心性之学的基本理念,后世儒家继承、发展孟子之说,构建了传统儒家心性之学的主流思想。现代新儒家对心性之学给予高度评价,视其为中国文化“神髓”之所在。《为中国文化敬告世界人士宣言》对心性之学在中国文化中的价值作出了颇为精到的阐发,说明了心性之学是道德实践的基础,是“天人合一”(“天人合德”)思想的根据。当今学术界论中国文化的“天人合一”之说,多从中国文化追求人与自然的和谐、人与他人的和谐、人与社会的和谐的角度立论,这固然不错,但其实“天人合一”思想首要的精义在于“内在超越”。
