It is estimated that the alternation rate of foraminifera species in the deep sea is 2% / Ma, which is obviously lower than that of the Cenozoic shallow benthic (5% / Ma) or planktonic foraminifer (11% / Ma). Cretaceous - Tertiary boundary (65Ma) or nearby events triggered a catastrophic extinction of terrestrial and shallow water and some semi-oceanic organisms, but had little effect on deep-sea benthic foraminifera.
