My teacher’s role has always been intertwined with the architectural design work. The design work is divided into two stages: the heavy structure and the light system. 10 years before 2005 I designed a series of public buildings for Yancheng, Jiangsu Province, including youth activity centers, schools and hospitals. As a positive case of individual influence on the development of cities and buildings, these projects were selected for various architectural exhibitions and I became one of the earliest mainland independent architects to be featured in international academic exhibitions. The project’s exploration of spatial organization, material perception, structural techniques, and even architectural physics led to academic discussions: for example, youth centers became clues to transparency as a way to generate organizational space, and hospital wards suggested organizational innovations, structures frame
