The status of chaos theory in nonlinear science is outlined. The basic principles, research methods and their roles in solving complex laws of nature are expounded. The application of the theory in fluid mechanics is emphatically introduced. Finally, the possibility of introducing chaos theory into the seepage system is analyzed. It is believed that the chaos theory can guide the study of seepage mechanics and improve the study of seepage mechanics to a higher level
