在人类所有的细菌性疾病中,大概麻风是最令人困惑的。它在临床上和组织病理学上表现出各种不同的类型,对于有效的化学治疗则产生不同速度的反应,而且正规治疗的病人可以发生持续的不适感和炎症发作期(即所谓“麻风反应”),在此阶段还可以出现神经进一步的明显损害和畸形。过去5~6年以来,应用现代免疫学技术已经阐明了许多有关麻风最费解的特殊表现,而且揭示了宿主——寄生物关系的某些复杂问题。
Of all the bacterial diseases in humans, probably the most puzzling is leprosy. It exhibits various clinical and histopathological types, with different rates of response to effective chemotherapy, and patients who are regularly treated can experience persistent discomfort and inflammatory episodes (the so-called “leprosy response ”), At this stage can be further obvious nerve damage and deformity. The application of modern immunology techniques over the past five to six years has elucidated many of the most perplexing manifestations of leprosy and has revealed some of the complexities of host-parasite relationships.
