本文从《欲望如烟》对“堕民”形象的塑造入手,初步探讨了沈贻炜先生新作的文化底蕴与艺术魅力。文章指出,作为一部反映清末社会动荡的历史小说。它将历史透镜的聚光点投射到中国社会的一个特殊阶层--“堕民”身上,对“宏大叙事”模式的突破,成为其个性化叙事得以充分展示的前提,显示出作家在处理历史题材创作时的独到之处;在表现手法上,作家将历史的真实与自我人生的经验与顿悟结合,塑造出一批生动可感的人物形象,达到艺术真实与历史真实的高度统一。在贱民问题正逐渐被中国人驱逐到历史记忆深处的今天,这部小说的文化含义尤其值得重视。
