The OECD survey of Swiss research and development activities is consistent with the country's own recent review of its goals and guidelines for research and development policies. In ordinary people's minds, Switzerland is a country that values science and technology - the combination of science and technology has played a crucial role in the life of the Swiss people. This can be seen in many fields, including the historic Swiss clock and watch with a high degree of precision and world-renowned, as well as cutting-edge chemical and pharmaceutical industries that have developed this century. In order to promote the prosperity of science and technology, research and development investment must be kept at a very high level. In addition, the development of science and technology depends to a large extent on the basic conditions under which research and development activities are carried out and maintained, as well as the fundamental policies that the country has adopted to promote scientific progress. These and other related issues are the topics under discussion in a detailed survey of recent national science and technology activities in Switzerland by the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development in Paris.
