妈湾港区由深圳南油集团公司开发。1987年开始建设,1990年7月建成1个3.5万吨级多用途泊位,1990年10月对外国籍船舶开放。妈湾港区有泊位8个,其中深水泊位4个,最大靠泊能力为5万吨级,码头岸线长1638米。 妈湾港区面临珠江口矾石深水航道,以涨潮流为主,含沙量少,港区天然水深9～14米,进港航道长7200米,宽500米,水深11米,可乘潮通航5万吨级船舶。妈湾港区是我国优良的河口港区,水域宽阔,自然水深超过10米,而且与密布的珠江水网相联接,形成良好的水水中转条件。妈湾港区后方宽广,能开辟大规模的仓储基地。
