依靠单一的简单RISC体系结构推动计算机性能发展的阶段已经基本结束。当前计算机工业界主要采用超级标量技术或超级流水线技术来设计新一代RISC微处理器芯片。 美国MIPS公司在这新一轮RISC争夺战中,与越级标量技术设计者背道而驰,采用超级流水线技术设计具有全64位结构的R4000。为了面向简单的台式系统设计,还推出一种取消了次级Cache控制的简化型R4000芯片。值得指出:今年4月份,国际上21家有名计算机公司成立一个先进计算机环境联盟机构,决定选用R4000作为RISC芯片标准。
