Since the disintegration of the Soviet Union and the drastic changes in Eastern Europe, the economic ties between Russia and Central and Eastern European countries and the EU have become increasingly close. In 2004, the enlargement of the EU’s eastward expansion into the vast majority of Central and Eastern European countries in the EU common market will inevitably affect the economic relations between Russia and the EU. In the short term, as the economic relations between Russia and the EU and Central and Eastern European countries are mainly embodied in energy cooperation, the eastward expansion has little effect on the economic relations between Russia and the EU. However, in the long run, due to the enlargement of the EU, the further strengthening of the economic cooperation between the EU and Central and Eastern European countries and the unavoidable exclusivity of the EU as a regional economic group, it may have a negative impact on the economic relations between Russia and the EU.
