KOBE, Japan: A team led by Naoki Kawaki, Hiroshima University, reported at the Japan Vitamin Association meeting that experimental dosing of vitamin E (alpha-tocopherol) can reduce ischemic liver damage. The team said vitamin E has this effect because it inhibits peroxisomal lipids that cause ischemic damage when resuscitating blood flow after ischemia, or promotes adenosine triphosphate resynthesis. The team reported that the main cause of ischemic hepatocellular damage is biofilm damage caused by lipid peroxidation; coenzyme Q administered before ischemia inhibits lipid peroxidation. They also found that within ischemia and liver tissue and within the mitochondria
