This article describes an expert system shell development environment, ESSDE, that allows users to choose from a variety of rules-based knowledge base mechanisms for managing users to construct specialized expert system shells. ESSDE consists of a number of meta-interpreters that perform goal-oriented inference engines, a number of interpretation mechanisms, rule tracking, and different functions of precision and inaccurate reasoning. ESSDE also provides interfaces and mechanisms for “asking users questions,” as well as storing Intermediate conclusions and reevaluation of the conclusions of the function. ESSDE currently runs on more than 5,886 microcomputers and is constructed so that system engineers can easily add new functionality to the system.
