George F. Gao, Director General of the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention (China CDC), was elected as a foreign associate by the U.S. National Academy of Sciences on April 30. The recognition is considered one of the highest honors a scientist or engineer can receive in the U.S.
Gao is also dean of the Savaid Medical School of the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and vice president of the National Natural Science Foundation of China. His research interests include the molecular mechanism of interspecies transmission of pathogens, molecular virology, and molecular immunology.
Gao received his bachelor’s degree from Shanxi Agricultural University in 1983 and a PhD from the University of Oxford in 2004. He worked at the University of Oxford as a lecturer and doctoral supervisor from 2001 to 2004 before returning to China to head the CAS Institute of Microbiology. Holiday Refl ections
Qianjiang Evening News May 5
During this May Day holiday, tourists waiting in endless lines was a common sight at scenic spots, which shows that Chinese people’s passion for traveling is continuing to grow. People grasped this opportunity to travel, despite knowing that tourist spots and public transportation would be crowded.
While tourism remains a key driver of domestic consumption, the rapid growth in the sector has also brought problems. The lack of proper management of tourism is one of the issues that need to be addressed. The demand for public services greatly increases during the peak travel periods. Better preparation is required to cater to the needs of the increased number of tourists, for instance, putting more temporary toilets in areas with a high density of tourists.
The trend also indicates that the amount of annual paid leave supplementing the public holidays has failed to satisfy people’s travel needs. Enterprises across China have implemented policies on paid leave in recent years. People should be encouraged to travel outside the peak holiday periods in order to avoid the strain on services which occurs each public holiday.
Imbalances in tourism resources are another cause of poor travel experience during festivals. It is difficult for places lacking cultural and ecological features to develop the tourism industry and attract people. As a result, overcrowding of big cities and popular scenic spots during the holidays is inevitable. However, there is room for improvement in the industry. Many rural and mountainous areas have precious tourism resources, which have great potential to be developed into tourist destinations. Trend of Urbanization
China Financial Weekly April 29
Chinese cities are still undergoing urbanization at different rates, as complex demands of citizens on living standards are proving diffi cult to meet. Research on the further improvement of cities conducted by several institutions, such as the Liaowang Institute, has proposed the development of cities with built-in modern, urban facilities.
In the context of the new technological revolution, urbanization is no longer confi ned to traditional urban construction, but also involves reconstruction and upgrading of cities. At the same time, by linking the surrounding towns with advanced technologies, a city cluster can be developed, which transforms the original urban system.
To realize the blueprint of urbanization, a scientifi c top-level design is necessary. It should provide clear guidance to overall construction according to local conditions and clarify the functions of different areas. A smart city cluster platform should be created with the ability to collect and connect data while providing analysis. Data privacy should also be emphasized.
The arrival of 5G telecommunication technology and the application of artifi cial intelligence can provide strong technical support for the upgrading of logistics and telecommunication, as well as the management of cities.
Ecosystems should also be paid attention to in the process of urbanization. Infrastructure systems including energy and transportation should be eco-friendly and meet the standards of green development. Cities should utilize more renewable energy and further promote clean and new energy vehicles.
Traditional and new industries should be integrated along with the development of green industries such as cultural tourism and modern agriculture. Cultural spaces should also be created with an emphasis on making a city an attractive and livable place.
A New Way to Learn

According to the latest report released by the China Internet Network Information Center, the number of short video users reached 648 million by December 2018, accounting for about 78.2 percent of China’s 829 million Internet users. Short video streaming has surpassed conventional online videos to become the second largest segment of the Internet industry after instant messaging.
Short videos and live broadcasts have grown in popularity among young people who enjoy the fun of sharing videos with their peers. This year, 18.27 million people have watched educational videos on Bilibili, a popular Chinese online video platform which has provided 1.03 million live broadcasts for learning. Experts point out that it is common for adolescents to learn through mobile networks.
Short videos have been applied in many other fi elds. For instance, some traditional publishing agencies are using this method to showcase their latest books, looking to expand their reach.
BAIDU CEO TRIGGERS DEBATE
Robin Li, founder and CEO of search engine giant Baidu, was nominated as an academician candidate of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, according to a statement released by the academy on April 30.
However, the nomination has triggered heated debate, with some claiming Li was unqualified because of Baidu’s insufficient regulation of medical advertising, a key source of income for the search engine.
Li is one of 531 candidates, including 114 entrepreneurs. The candidates will be subject to a strict selection process, with only around 10 to 15 percent getting the prestigious title, the highest in the Chinese engineering sector.
Baidu came under fire in 2016 when Wei Zexi, a 21-year-old university student, died from a rare cancer. Wei was researching the disease on Baidu and came across an advertisement for treatments that he used but proved ineffective. The incident prompted Baidu to restructure its medical business.
