Lymphoma is one of the common malignant tumors in human beings. Its etiology is complicated and may be related to virus infection, immune deficiency, ionizing radiation, chemical poisons and gene mutation. Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) has been proven to be the causative agent of human infectious mononucleosis and is closely related to various malignancies such as nasopharyngeal carcinoma, gastric cancer, lymphoma and Hodgkin’s disease. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are small, non-coding RNAs that play an important role in cell proliferation, differentiation, apoptosis and tumorigenesis. The present study shows that EBV can sustain virus infection by encoding viral miRNAs or altering intracellular miRNA expression, which may be an important reason for lymphoma formation. This article reviews the progress of miRNA in EBV-related lymphoma.
