The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched—they must be felt with the heart. —Helen Keller

Oh my gosh, did you hear that the iPhone 5 will be out soon? I can’t wait. And I really must get a new pair of boots—these are so last season. Honey, we are almost certainly going to need another car this year. Well why shouldn’t we get it? I’m sure we need it. We’re just missing one more thing. I’m sure it will come in handy one day…
Stuff. Just look around your house and start counting—1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 100, 300, 1000…the number rises faster than you could possibly imagine. Our lives are filled with things. But are they really necessary? Well, as the old phrase goes, money can’t buy happiness, and this month at Crazy English Reader we’ll be looking at how you can live a happier, more meaningful life through simplicity.
First up we take a look at the beneficial side of simplicity (How to Live Simply: Lessons I Learned from My Grandparents) and the lessons we can learn from this lifestyle. We next move to the extreme of the simple life (Could You Live with just 100 Things?) and discover that what we need is actually minimal—but what we want can be more than expected. By cutting out and cutting down, we can adjust our lifestyles for the better.
Next, we cut to the soul and realize that we’ve divided ourselves into complex pieces. We spend so much of our lives multi-tasking and trying to fit into different roles that we forget who we truly are. Only by learning to tune in to ourselves (The Art of Simplifying) can we truly find what matters in life. Finally, we are able to see that joy comes from the simple things in life (The Joy of Less). True happiness is achieved through the heart—not our wallets. Sure, we may have less stuff, but we are surrounded by love, and that is something that cannot be bought.
And so, we urge ourselves to live more with less. Savor the simple life. Know what’s important. After all, it might be a cool phone, but what does it matter if you have no one to share it with?
