在西方新闻界看来,对灾难事件的报道几乎最大限度地体现了新闻价值的要素,即“时间的接近性、距离的接近性、异常性、著名性、进展性以及情操性”。①美国新闻学教授比尔·伯尼博士认为:“对新闻媒介来说,最有市场价值的是交通失事、水灾、火灾、地震、谋杀、战争、行业纠纷以及死亡和伤害。”②按照我国学者对新闻价值的定义③,灾难新闻在新鲜性、重要性、反常性、接近性和趣味性(包括人情味)上同样具有非常高的价值。
