用硫酸汞为催化剂的乙炔液相合成乙醛在工业上已是一个定型的生产过程,但是由于汞的价格很贵,损耗很大,每生产一吨乙醛有时可损失十公斤之多,少的也有两公斤;催化剂溶液是强酸性,需要特殊的耐腐蚀设备;汞有剧毒,影响工人健康;需要高纯度的乙炔,不能利用取自天然气的乙炔等等,因此很多国家,如苏联、德国、日本、瑞典等国在最近一、二十年内都在致力于寻求新催化剂的研究。
