中国自古以来就存在一个被正史所忽略的由游民群体所组成的“游民社会”。游民脱离了宗法社会的束缚,在长期的交往中形成了特殊的群体性格、人格楷模、价值取向、社会理想和行为方式。武侠小说和武侠电影中的侠客蔑视世俗律令、崇尚武力、以暴抗暴的行为以及他们路见不平,拔刀相助的侠义精神使得他们成为了游民群体的人格楷模。江湖也不是一个具体的空间概念,而是游民人生世界的象征。武侠电影通过将武术技击和游民生活浪漫化,将游民群体中的勇敢分子——侠客士大夫化,从而呈现出一个被美化了的游民世界。
