The levels of plasma endothelin (ET) were measured in 56 patients with essential hypertension by radioimmunoassay. The plasma levels of angiotensin Ⅱ (AⅡ) and atrial natriuretic peptide (ANF) were also measured to explore the relationship between ET, AⅡ And ANF in the pathogenesis of essential hypertension. Results, plasma ET, A Ⅱ and ANF levels in patients with essential hypertension were significantly higher than the control group. Moreover, with the development of hypertension, the level of ET gradually increased; the increase of ET level was positively correlated with the increase of AⅡ and ANF levels. With conversion enzyme inhibitor enalapril treatment, the three levels were significantly decreased. It is concluded that the occurrence and progression of hypertension are related to the increase of plasma ET level and further affect the progression of hypertension by AⅡ and ANF. The decrease of blood pressure caused by converting enzyme inhibitors may be related to the decrease of plasma ET content and the simultaneous decrease of AⅡ and ANF contents.
