China is no longer just a factory in the world. China is rapidly emerging as a leader in innovation in the world. My colleague Ye Enhua conducted a field survey in China for three years. The survey results convinced us that the private sector in China already has the capability to challenge multinational enterprises in the Mainland. They are at the forefront of a compelling and innovative revolution. The revolution is divided into three stages: the first stage, from simple imitation to “tailoring”; the second stage, from followers to the makers of world standards; the third stage, from the pursuit of new resources to the pursuit of new knowledge.
