廖恩燾的名字,對於近代文學研究者已經十分陌生。隱而不彰的原因,或因其人的職業外交官身份。或因政治的顧忌。但廖氏參與晚清“文學改良”的一段史實,以及民國後所作詩詞歌賦,自有其值得關注的文學史價值。由於廖恩燾無論生平事迹還是文學創作,在以往的記述中不僅零散,且多有錯訛。因此,本文將首先鉤稽史料,還原其人生軌迹,繼而考索他在民國年間的創作情况,而將重點放在晚清時期,意在通過廖恩燾這一個案,揭示晚清“文學改良”周邊的狀况。需要說明的是,為了論述的方便,本文將集中考察廖氏的詩歌寫作,而另文討論其戲曲編撰。
