在封建礼教的束缚下,我国广大农村妇女始终生活在社会底层,湘赣边界农村妇女受压迫更严重,这是引导她们参加革命的基础.在千头万绪的工作中,边界党组织和毛泽东在井冈山斗争时期仍然非常重视妇女工作,毛泽东、朱德、彭德怀等为此付出了许多努力,帮助湘赣边界妇女思想觉醒,进而促进了她们自身解放.思想得到解放的广大妇女,以各种方式参与、支持根据地斗争,成为一支不可或缺的重要力量.她们为井冈山革命根据地的建立、巩固和发展做了大量工作,在斗争中发挥了重要作用.
