In the 21st century, the rapid development of Shanghai’s urban economy has attracted thousands of foreign investors to invest in Shanghai, and various international business conferences and cultural conventions and exhibitions have become more frequent. Among the shortage of talents required for the development of Shanghai, middle-level and senior-level interpreters are the first to bear brunt. However, among the large number of people who understand foreign languages, talents who are proficient in interpretation and translation are scarce. The birth of the “Shanghai Interpreting Job Qualification Certificate” has greatly stimulated the enthusiasm of many students and citizens to improve their English skills. In recent years, the number of participants in the interpretation exams has soared. Students who have passed the CET 4/6 exam have challenged the interpreting exams. More white-collar workers have also used various types of interpretation coaching on weekends. In 2003, the number of applicants for interpreting exams exceeded 20,000, and in March 2004, more than 27,000 candidates were enrolled, which is more than the number of local graduates in Shanghai this year. “Interpretation fever” also spreads throughout the Yangtze River Delta.
