Three brothers and their cousin, raised in the Southern States by their father,a travelling, alcoholic preacher, who spread the gospel.
They played the blues, their first album being Youth and Young Manhood, a unique sound. The second album is quite different from the first, and subtler. Musically it is innovative and diverse and Caleb’s vocal style is as individual as ever. His rasping chords sounds like he’s just smoked 50 fags but he remains tuneful and purveys strong emotion whether exhilaration, tenderness or pain.

Jack White returned primitivism to the hit parade, though his aesthetic ideas are limited. White’s commercial success is based on a strong, emotive voice delivering simple yet distinctive songs, which are fairly numerous here. White Moon is a slow piano paean, stinging with maracas, moonlight-sonata piano, and subtle drums. Jack’s lyrics here show a white-horse lucidity akin to the films of Zhang Yimou, aglide on color, fluid motion, and imagistic fantasy.
And when he sticks to electric guitar he still rocks plenty.
