The development of Canadian literature reflects the evolution of Canadian colonial thinking. Canadian literature in the 1920s showed a concern for the humanities and the future, and in the 1960s the shift to a review of the past reflected the maturity of Canadian literature. However, the past orientation of this literature has also developed into a narcissistic narration. The development of Canadian literature is in line with Lacan’s self-theory because narcissism is an inherent attribute of a person’s identity and is a permanent condition for one to understand oneself. Contemporary Canadian literature is following such dialectic logic while at the same time postmodernism is willing to discover itself and its history.
